Births, Marriages and Deaths
Sources for finding dates and locations of births, baptisms, marriages,
deaths and burials

General Sources
For births, deaths and marriages after 1837, events can be identified by searching the General Register Office indexes and then applying for a certificate.

The GRO indexes are available on microfiche in a number of main libraries and digitised versions can be searched of a fee at a number of websites.  Click here for a guide to understanding the indexes.

The index entries give names, the quarter in which the event was registered, the registration district and a reference number.  To see the details of the event eg the birth date, name of the father, place of birth etc. a certificate must be applied for - these details will help you build your family tree.  The various methods of application are listed here.

Monumental Inscriptions
The East Yorkshire Family History Society has catalogued monumental inscriptions for:

Old Malton (St. Mary's Priory), no 123 in their series.  An invaluable work since many headstones are now under grass.
